What do the letters DOM-TOM stand for ?

T
he "Dom-Tom" letters are the acronym the French republic uses for "Départements d'Outre-Mer - Territoires d'Outre-Mer" (Overseas Departments - Overseas Territories). One could say these Dom-Tom are just the rest of French colonies worldwide. The Brits had it easier : they called it the Commonwealth and then they the Queen's portrait on their coins, stamps.

Let's be down-to-earth : the Dom-Tom at the Institute for Telenautics was grounded as a Department, not as a Territory.

Why on earth didn't you then just call it Dom, which is a lot shorter than Dom-Tom ?

Because Tom is a nice little drummer boy, and the Dom-Tom is NOT a World Domination Enterprise, neither does it belong to the Next Generation.

La cause est entendue.
